St. Paul’s Church in partnership with Grace
Episcopal Church/Yorktown and St. Andrew's Episcopal Church/Newport News began an after-school ministry, Learning
for Life, to offer at-risk children a good and safe
place for education, for leadership development, and recreation. During the school year, fourth and fifth-grade boys meet at St. Paul's on Thursday afternoons. Mentors provide transportation, nutrition education and healthy snacks, team games, and learning activities that focus on personal development, community building, and good citizenship. The program offers a variety of field trips during the year and makes possible a two-week residential summer camp experience, all expenses paid, for each boy who wishes to participate.
To involve more suburban youth in the justice ministry of
legislative advocacy, St. Paul’s, in partnership with
the Roman Catholic Diocese of Richmond and St. Kateri Tekakwitha
Roman Church, has developed an overnight retreat, “A
Window on the Powerlessness of Poverty.” The Retreat
Program offers an on-site, guided retreat for young adults
and provides an immersion experience/reflection on life with
the poor in the inner city.
